Battle Report: Vadinax Campaign - Mission 10 The Fated Hour

++++

Thick gray-black columns of smoke billowed from blazes in every direction.  The wreckage of shattered power armor and charred dead were in piles too deep to see the mud.  Ruined gauntlets clutching emptied bolters and tattered banners propped up by bearers in deathly repose, everything stained in soot and gore.

It was the last ditch gambit to reclaim the Noctalith monuments buried on Tern's Endeavor, and the Ultramarines held on just long enough, but there would be few veterans from that campaign.

It's the end of the Vadinax Campaign and for 9th Edition Warhammer 40k!  As the global campaign went on, and as we got more and more announcements about the new edition, the crusade seemed to slow down.  Luckily the LGS game organizer Quinn agreed to play one last mission to end the season.  What better way to go out than on a Fated Hour mission where the stakes were high - characters could be completely killed off.

I spent my final Fate Point and set up a show down in the special zone "The Underside" which had to be unlocked during the campaign.  The Eldar were in control, but Faustus' desperate gambit might just turn control over to the Imperium in the final, fated hour!

Takeaways & Analysis:

Quinn's list was a bit strong for our match up, and since The Yncarne is fun but also a pseudo named character - I wanted to see how it worked but we agreed on a special mission that would balance things out a bit and be thematic for the Ultramarines assaulting the Eldar position.  In the end we came up with a mission where the Eldar had to hold their deployment objective in order to score, but it didn't count for them.  For the Ultramarines, we got an extra objective that we could place anywhere in our deployment zone, and no units could deep strike into our deployment area.  Also, he had the constraint that many units had to start in reserves to simulate a surprise attack.

It is easy to get rusty pretty fast with this game, and I was already forgetting a lot of the crusade bonuses that I had accumulated on various units.  While I remembered most of them for characters, the single battle traits for troop and elite units were sometimes forgotten (specifically my +1s to hit on terminators and on my speeder melta guns).  I also forgot my medal of sacrifice buff on the devastators.  I think it might have helped a bit but I still did ok.  The only other glairing mistake was to not screen Kill Team Rubrum from a key Banshee charge with my tactical squad.  The Banshees are quite scary in melee, but I guess is something you have to witness first-hand to truly appreciate.

The Eldar also made a mistake though in leaving the biker character too far away from his body guards.  My devastator squad was able to snipe him from across the battlefield with a single shot!  Should have used that strand of fate dice!

Meanwhile - the fated hour arrived - Lt Commander Psigoras and Venerable Brother 'Fury' were cut down by the Striking Scorpion Exarch and Autarch Prince Mynailos.  Fury's internal ammo explosion got revenge, however, but the blast (or rather the out of action test with fated hour rules) meant that Psigoras was killed.

Lt. Commander Psigoras falls this day...

*sneaking noises*

Chaplain Regulus made use of the Dark Age Teleportarium once more and with Squad Tourbillion was able to shut down their key warp gate and deny the Eldar any objective points for one turn.

In all it was a great game, it was very close and aside from a couple of mistakes on both sides and a few early bad rolls I think it went well.  Truly the Yncarne is very hard to pin down as it can bounce everywhere across the board.  I think with the mission rules we were able to balance out the power level differences fairly well.  Quinn was able to table me by turn 4 (which apparently will be an auto-victory in 10th edition) but I was able to collect enough points to barely hold on for the win!

Brother Cornelius holds the point to the bitter end!

Though the crusade is now over, I have spent my last RP on the "Even in Death I still Serve" Space Marine Requisition to inter Brother Psigoras into a dreadnought.  Really an awesome, thematic finish to the campaign and it will be interesting to see what might carry over into Season 2!

It's the 9th Vadinax campaign mission and we have finally hit the 2000 point game mark!  This was also the first match facing an opponent that I squared off against before, in fact it was Darryl from the very first match.  Celvorn's Mauraders were looking for revenge!

    Takeaways & Analysis:

This one was a combination of playing a bit too cautious and not bringing in deep strike at the right time.  Also, cold dice did not help at all.  For example, all of my tactical squads rolled 1 on their advance moves to try and contest the objectives.  So between that and deploying a bit further back to not get charged, my opponent was able to control the objectives all game.

Captain Faustus hurls his attackers off a building.
The Red Corsairs have an ability to delay one squad from reserves - this made me choose to wait to deploy all the terminators until turn 3, which was a big mistake.  Furthermore, I dropped them in-between the terminators, lord discordant, and demon prince - who of course surrounded my units and crushed them right after.  I had no choice because I needed objectives, but yeah, any other location would have been a better idea...

Darryl suggested that I would have been better off starting all the terminators on the board, and this is likely true.  I should have gone for holding the center and the jungle objectives (and my own) and backed those up with terminators for the counter charges.  Might not have helped on missing the advance rolls, but if I had started the tactical squads as close as possible and then rushed, then maybe.  I still would have needed to send something at the crater objective as a feint, perhaps the vanguard vets.

Brother Velox did redeem himself and achieve the Quest of Atonement though, and Captain Faustus had some cool melee combats throwing traitors off a building while then using his dark age displacer belt to zip around the battle field.  Also, the re-equipped Squad Nero with their new multi-meltas did a pretty good job of nuking both the rhino and the obliterator squad.  I'll need to find a way to get them in a bit closer safely.

The Ultramarines make their stand against the Marauders warp-swelled champions.

    Explicator Bromley Complete!

Continuing with my experiment with "Slap Chop 2.0", or should I say concurrently - I have completed the Inquisitorial Acolyte Explicator Bromley.  Bromley has appeared several times now in the Vadinax Global Campaign as well as in my upcoming new D&D campaign as a variant human wizard.

Overall I'm fairly happy with how he turned out.  Contrast worked pretty well for the robes and face, as well as the parchment.  On both the Multi-Melta Devastators and Bromley, I experimented with an undercoat of Iyanden Yellow contrast before using a second coat of Blood Angels Red contrast to really warm it up.  It worked great.

I also used a drybrush technique to do the flames on the torch/flamethrower staff.  I think it worked out well and it was very simple.  I used the Artis Opus technique and brushes.  I probably could have used more orange, red, and black/gray, but its still fine, just a bit hotter of a flame.  A lot of examples of the model had painted the brazier dark metallic colors, but since the flames were leaping out a bit, I felt the illumination/heat effect looks realistic enough.

Overall the model came together in a total of just over 9.5 hours.  When compared with other character models that I've painted recently, contrast cut the time roughly in half.  I would say that the "Slap Chop" technique is really great for troops, especially ones with a lot of skin or fabric type surfaces, but for characters I think the savings in time dramatically fall off.  You're going to want to be spending time on details, and characters are usually small batches of models, so at that point I think traditional techniques perhaps augmented by contrast tinting make more sense, or I guess at that point it becomes using the right paint technique for the job.  Again as before I have the same criticism of the zenithal quality from a rattle can - it probably looks better with an air brush.

I didn't go for any OSL effects from the torch this time, but I suppose I could revisit that maybe, but probably not though.  Those effects could have been potentially achieved in the beginning step using some tinting undercoats perhaps, but again an airbrush would have probably been the way.

The model itself is a classic OOP metal miniature and I think the date on it was 2003.  Its found in the 2005 Catalogue as "Witch Hunter Acolyte 2: 9947010804803" - I was lucky to find it on eBay exactly when Inquisitorial Acolytes were added to the Vadinax Campaign to attach to your army to provide a re-roll bonus.  It was the perfect chance to paint up a fun miniature that could also easily double as a steampunk D&D wizard!

Battle Report: Vadinax Campaign - Mission 8 More Orks

The 8th Vadinax campaign mission was a bit of a clunker for me.  I had upgraded my Order of Battle to 2000 points which had me increase the Vanguard Veterans unit size, and I had upgraded my chaplain to a Master of Sanctity.  But this made it hard to take a good 1500 point list.

I knew it was a bad idea not to take any tactical marines, but yet I did it anyway.

    Takeaways & Analysis:

Learned a lot in this one.  Cheap troops - while now not compulsory, are still critical to have to screen and bubble wrap the hard hitting units.  In this case, if I had brought some troops to initially contest my objectives, the Orks would have charged into them instead.  Then I could have counter-charged my elite units (terminators, vanguard vets) and gotten solid first strikes with them.  And of course, my opponent might not have even walked into that, so I would have had less pressure initially.  So that one bad choice (which I knew but still did anyway) had me mad at myself the whole game and got it off to a bad start right away.

Some poor rolling with my anti-vehicle units, vs a vehicle heavy list was a disaster.  I'm very close to adding some more anti-vehicle models which should help.

Finally, I was sloppy with positioning, and it was one of those games where the opponent was capitalizing on them and it had the feeling of a competitive match rather than a narrative match.

Battle Report: Vadinax Campaign - Mission 7 Da Lucky Gits

     +++++++

As the smoke thinned around battlefield, Regulus extended a gauntlet out to Faustus.  The mission had been to strike the Ork encampment located in The Graves, recover key components looted from Valern Citadel, and destroy the rest.

Faustus took the offered grip up and lifted his powered down Tactical Dreadnought Armor up to a kneeling position, it would need a few more patches again.

"Well, that did not go to plan." Faustus lightly offered, letting his Chaplain know his mood was still good.

"Not quite as dictated by the Codex." Regulus chuckled.

All around them were the bodies of Orks, piled high at the feet of the terminators securing the area.

"Reports are that we eliminated the majority of the force, but the rest made out with their loot during the fighting."

Chief Apothecary Singa had managed to pull his mangled bionic leg out from under a dead Squig, looked like that would need repairs too. He set about triaging the wounded and collecting gene-seed from the fallen.

Faustus sighed and gripped the bridge of his nose in a wince, even genetically enhanced humans got headaches from frustration. "Two steps forward..."

Thunderhawks were already arriving, and so it was time to get to his feet and oversee the exfiltration.  But just before turning is thoughts to the task at hand, Faustus decided it was time for a different approach.

     +++++++

A rare second game for the week in the Vadinax Campaign for me.  I faced off against some very lucky, but also well played Orks.  It was a great game and fun was had by all.  My opponent Paul did a great job keeping me off objectives.  He plays as the "lucky" blue Deathskulls, but while he was pretty lucky this game, I think there is probably a bit more to it as he extends his quite impressive win streak.

    Takeaways & Analysis:

My plan was to first achieve the Quest for Atonement for Squad Velox and clear out their battle scar, and also deploy far back so that I would be able to charge the Orks first.  My analysis had been that they were fast mobile infantry.  I had the right plan, but my execution was really lacking.  First I didn't deploy very far back, and second I threw myself off and failed to shoot at the forward deployed Kommandos on the objective in the first turn.  That center objective was on an interesting elevated bit of terrain, but it meant the only unit fast enough to get there was Squad Velox.  So, my own turn one mistakes really set me off on the wrong foot.  I think the big takeaway here is that two games in a week is a bit much for me.

Another surprise that I didn't know ahead was that these were Deathskulls Orks, so I found out that a bit late about their clan kultur.  While their re-rolls and 5+ shrug are 'lucky' and thematic - the huge one is that all of their infantry have Obsec, which I think is really, really strong.  This allowed the Nobz, who had missed their charge, to steal one of my objectives.

As a consequence of deploying too far forward in some cases, and also standing on objectives rather than back a bit (I need to get the objective mats that show the full zone) I didn't screen out the back as well as I was trying to, and so some Burnaz jumped in.

In the end, we had some punishing battles, but I had managed to clear out most of his models, however, by then I had lost just too many points that I wasn't able to recover.  It was a bit of a strange one though, units that usually die lived, and units that usually live died!  Also, wacky dice rolls: "Orks who couldn't charge and Ultramarines who couldn't shoot!"

    Squad Nox falls...

But sets up a decisive counter charge, though Faustus falls too...

For once it is Regulus left standing!

The Deff Dread careens into the speeders!  But they both hang on!

Most of the Orks are slain (except the Shokk Attack Gunner in the upper right, and the hiding Lootaz and Grots)!

Battle Report: Vadinax Campaign - Mission 6 A Thousand Splendid Sons

Explicator Bromely briefly looks up from his tome.  The Dark Age teleportation chamber on this ancient battle barge is vast, larger than any he has seen before, with no light reaching the high ceilings. Steam from all around the platforms billow upwards into the darkness.  The rumble in the room is deafening, as the energizers power up, slowly building with a buzzing quality adding in as well.  He cannot see much else beyond two hulking terminators flanking him.  Most of the light in the room emanates from the pad beneath his feet.  He turns back to his recitations.

"The absence of faith is the mark of the weak.  The absence of faith is the mark of the heretic..."

Across the chamber, the main door splits open.  Flanked by servitors on both sides, Praelior Tarquinius Regulus marches through the wide entrance.  Clad in the black tactical dreadnought armor and bone white skull helm of his office.  From his helm vox, his voice roars above the rumble of the teleportarium machinery.

"What is it to be Death?"

In unison, Squads Tourbillion and Nox strike their fisted gauntlets to their chests. The bass notes of their responses echo about the chamber: "It is to be the destroyer, the end of all things."

Bromely is startled by the sudden salute, his own devotions now interrupted.  He swallows hard as he adjusts the goggles over his eyes.

Chaplain Regulus draws near to the wide, low steps to the first tier of the teleportarium.

"What is it to end life?"

"It is an honour, to be the executioners of the Emperor." echo the terminators.

"Twenty three seconds..." drones a servitor across the vox.

Regulus is now on the steps ascending into the amphitheater.  The flanking servitors carry the Benediction of Fury, and the Chaplain's blessed storm bolter.

    "Why do we fight?"

"To protect the Imperium and deliver mankind from the evil of the xenos, the mutant, and the heretic!"

Regulus reaches his teleportation pad, just in front of Bromely.  While Bromely is on the next tier up, Regulus is at eye level with him.  Bromely gasps.

"What is the fate of all foes?" booms the Chaplain, now only feet away.

"To perish in the fire of battle and be cleansed from the galaxy." the squads respond.

Regulus turns to face forward as the terminator squads flanking him on both sides move into battle positions, weapons drawn and raised.  The rumble of the chamber crescendos.  The servitors arm Regulus and quickly run from the pad.

    "Six seconds..."

"Who will prevail against the darkness?"

    "The Ultramarines!"

    "Two... One..."

Bromely grits his teeth as a blinding light flashes from everywhere, all at once.  Despite the goggles, he screws his eyes shut as far as they can go.  There is a thunderous boom!  A jolt of pain and vertigo that is gone instantly.  Then the sounds of war.  As he opens his eyes, the terminators are already in full charge, their storm bolters flaring and thunder hammers crackling.  Regulus is at the fore.

"FOR THE EMPEROR AND THE PRIMARCH! DEATH! BRING DEATH TO OUR FOES!"

We are in the sixth mission and eighth week of the Vadinax Campaign and while last time the Ultramarines saw a hard fought victory at the Valern Citadel, it fell anyway.  Now we fight the LGS Game Master and Crusade Manager himself, the great Quinn and his Thousand Sons (who fight for the space elves).  As per usual, I studied hard and approached the game with a plan, but still there were plenty of surprises.

    Takeaways & Analysis:

I've had really great luck with Tempest of War so far, and did I mention it's a real fun way to play?  You're never sure what you're going to need to do, but I think it can really level the playing field a bit.  But this was going to be almost a mirror match with terminators vs psyker terminators, dreadnoughts against dreadnoughts, and speedy things against speedy things.  I knew there would be a rumble in the middle (terminators are too slow to do anything else) but what I wasn't quite prepared for was the strong auspex scan style ability that the Thousand Sons had.

I played it pretty cautiously as I had the first turn.  Aside from sending Two Charlie, and Squads Velox and Kaiel to the near objective, I kept everyone else back behind the ruins.  The Thousand Sons were the first to venture out into the center.

Luckily we had a ruin in the middle of the battlefield that blocked line of sight and allowed me to beam in just in range.  Also, with my newly upgraded Dark Age Teleportarium, I could beam in 2 terminator squads (in front of the third on the board) and the hero of the match Chaplain Regulus sung his song of charging.  On top of that, the fleet Squad Tourbillion with their extra +1 move gave me basically a 5" charge.  Tourbillion, Nox, and Regulus himself didn't really seem to need any of that though, all of them handily making their charges.

Explicator Bromely was in for a ride as he followed Squad Nox into the fray - I elected to strike with them first and dumped two strategems onto them: Fury of the First, and Death to the Traitors - knowing that I had to hit hard to blunt the counter-strike.  Squad Nox (and the dice) came through in a big way with a knockout punch that took out 9 of the 10 Scarab Occult Terminators.

Quinn still had a lot of punch left though.  His warp magic completely nullified Squad Nox's invulnerable saves, and both the dreadnought and the sorcerer on the disc packed quite a punch.  Squad Nox would not fall, but Regulus did (again).  He always takes one for the team which is why I marked him for greatness.  Somehow Squads Nox and Tourbillion stayed alive long enough for Captain Faustus, Kill Team Rubrum, and Chief Apothecary Singa to swing in to support.

Thoh'out Paphib and his Disk of Tzeentch were not to be underestimated though.  While I had won the fight for the center objective, the sheer speed of the sorcerer was trouble for my back lines.  I can see the power of a strong and fast character who can sit in the exact center of an objective and use heroic intervention to bully troops off.  I was lucky enough to get Brother Sergeant Vitus and his squad to hang on just long enough to keep the point lead.  A critical save at the end prevented a point swing of maybe 15 points.  Always stay frosty, even if you feel like you're in the lead, a strong opponent can still do a lot by playing the mission.

Perhaps Squad Nero delayed Thoh'out Paphib just enough...

While in the end I played things right, I wonder if I could have changed things around a bit to use the speeders to chase after the disk and used some of the other units to secure the back line?  Something to look at should I face The Remembrance again.  Ultramarines came out just ahead this time with some key Tempest of War objectives: 91-72.
